Taste the Island Bakery & Restaurant, nestled at 460 Peninsula Blvd in Hempstead, NY, is a vibrant culinary gem specializing in authentic Haitian cuisine that delights the senses and honors tradition. This charming spot is renowned for its mouthwatering dishes that bring the bold, comforting flavors of Haiti directly to Long Island’s tables.
At Taste the Island, every dish is a celebration of Caribbean heritage, crafted with care and rich seasoning. Their Griot—a Haitian fried pork specialty—is legendary among patrons. As one enthusiastic customer, Buck Whas, puts it, the griot boasts a perfectly crisp exterior that gives way to a tender, juicy interior, a harmony of textures that lingers in your memory. For optimal enjoyment, it’s best savored immediately, whether inside the bustling takeout spot or on the go.
The menu also stands out with an array of irresistible mains served alongside coconut-infused rice & beans or fluffy white rice, complemented by sweet fried plantains, savory gravy, and a touch of fiery hot sauce. Highlights include the tender Stew Goat (Cabrit en Sauce) and the richly flavored Conch Lambi, priced at $22 and $35 respectively, catering to those who crave authentic, hearty meals. Don’t miss the perfectly fried Turkey or the flavorful Fish Poisson, which evoke a taste of Haitian home cooking at its best.
Beyond mains, their pate and pineapple upside down cake provide sweet and savory bites that round out the dining experience. The fried plantains—both green and sweet—are fan favorites, praised for their flawless balance of crispiness and natural sweetness. Complement your meal with refreshing beverages like the tart lemonade, the distinctive Kola Lacaye, or the uniquely Haitian AK100 soda, enhancing every bite with authentic island flair.
The atmosphere at Taste the Island is unapologetically straightforward and purposeful—it’s a takeout-focused gem where food quality takes center stage. Customers appreciate the genuine, if no-frills, service and the assurance that they are getting fresh, carefully prepared dishes every time. While the staff can sometimes seem hurried, a little French or Creole goes a long way in connecting and feeling warmly welcomed, as noted by local diners.
Regulars like Lynn rave about the value and authenticity, emphasizing that while prices are on the higher end, “you definitely get what you pay for.” This is a place where every ingredient speaks of tradition, and every meal is worth the wait. Jhoe Velle Halili’s journey from Flushing—enduring a long bus ride and a patient wait after advance ordering—underscores the restaurant’s status as a destination for true Haitian food enthusiasts.
In essence, Taste the Island Bakery & Restaurant isn’t just a place to grab a quick bite; it’s a portal to Haitian culture and cuisine, lovingly preserved and boldly presented. Whether you’re craving the crispy, flavorful griot or the comforting goodness of stew goat, this spot offers a genuine taste of the island that leaves a lasting impression.
For those seeking a genuine Haitian culinary adventure in Hempstead, Taste the Island Bakery & Restaurant is a must-visit. Be sure to call ahead, bring your appetite, and prepare to be transported by the rich flavors of Haiti.
The BEST griot hands down. Perfect exterior crisp with tender interior. Given that it’s takeout only, I would recommend that you consume the griot immediately if not inside then in your car, on the bus or whatever but don’t wait to take it home! I was making a request, but the person helping me seem to be annoyed or frustrated, but then I switched to my subpar French, and it changed the whole vibe as he could see I was really interested in trying the authentic products and learning a bit more about them in frenchlish. Though a few times she did speak English. He spoke quite well. I can empathize as anyone who learns more than one language can relate sometimes we’re better at understanding than speaking or vice versa. I’m not sure about the other dishes as this was my first visit. There is also a homemade Haitian drink, which is quite rich and similar to Jamaican Irish sea moss but much smoother (less gooey) I hope the business prosperous and opens up a location in the city
Just Wow , the turkey is so good i enjoy the food for the first time
Hands down one of the best Haitian food places in Long Island. Worth the wait and every penny. The patties are fresh and taste so good. The fried plantains are fried perfectly and the pork is seasoned and also fried to perfection. They're on the pricier side but you definitely get what you pay for. It's for sure recommended and will continue seeing me as a customer.
We had an hour and a half bus ridee coming to this tiny restaurant all the way to Hempstead from Flushing. I have tried their food from a Haitian friend and I said I have to buy it myself to see the real restaurant. First is you have to call them first because it takes them 30 minutes to 1 hour to prepare your food. Secondly, there are no chairs and tables inside the restaurant. Food wise, I will rate them with 5 stars. Goat and Turkey meat were so full of flavors, tender and comes with rice and beans, with spicy pickliz and savory gravy. It brings out a very tasty combination even the shallots brings another twist to the enjoyable food experience. It may be far, but I will definitely come back. I hope they deliver soon in my area.
Man taking the order was ok greeting me as I walked in. Was informed order would take 20 mins which was not bad. The food was excellent. Seasoned and cooked well. Can't wait to order again.
